How to Store Handmade Soap for Long-Lasting Use

ree

Handmade soap is a luxury for your skin, crafted with natural ingredients and rich, skin-loving oils. Unlike commercial soaps packed with hardening agents and preservatives, handmade soap requires a little extra care to maintain its quality, longevity, and performance. Here’s how to keep your bars at their best.

Keep It Dry Between Uses

Water is the biggest enemy of handmade soap. To prevent your bar from becoming mushy and dissolving too quickly:

  • Use a draining soap dish – A dish with slats, ridges, or holes allows water to drain away.

  • Keep it away from direct water spray – Don’t leave it sitting in the shower stream.

  • Allow air circulation – Avoid placing your soap on flat, non-draining surfaces.

Store Unused Soap in a Cool, Dry Place

If you have extra bars waiting to be used, proper storage keeps them fresh:

  • Keep them in a breathable container – A wooden box or a paper bag helps air circulation while protecting from dust.

  • Avoid plastic wrap – Handmade soap needs to breathe, so avoid sealing it in airtight plastic.

  • Store in a linen closet or drawer – Not only does it keep your soap fresh, but it also leaves a lovely, natural scent on fabrics!

Give Your Soap a Longer Life

Want to make your handmade soap last even longer? Try these tricks:

  • Cut larger bars into smaller pieces – Use one piece at a time to extend the life of your soap.

  • Rotate between two bars – Let one dry out while you use the other.

  • Use a soap saver bag – A mesh or sisal bag helps create more lather and prevents small pieces from going to waste.

Handmade Soap Only Gets Better with Time

Unlike commercial soaps, handmade soap continues to cure over time, becoming harder and milder. Proper storage ensures it ages beautifully while retaining its skin-loving properties. Take care of your soap, and it will take care of your skin!
